Summer Suggestions

As first grade comes to an end, it is important to begin thinking about second grade. Below, we have compiled summer suggestions to help prepare your child for the next school year. The second grade teachers also included their ideas for ensuring a smooth transition in August.

In Math:
1.  Practice math facts (addition to 20 and subtraction from 20)
2.  Make up your own word problems
3.  Play computer games

In Reading:
1.  Go to the library
2.  Read on a daily basis and check for comprehension; remember to read fiction and non-fiction and poetry
3.  Play computer games
4.  Practice retelling information you learned after reading a fiction and nonfiction story (both orally and in writing); tell the main idea
5.  Participate in a book club with your friends
6.  Relate the story to a relevant experience (this may be a personal experience or another story your child has read)
7.  Read with expression (60 words per minute is the goal)

In Writing:
1.  Keep a summer journal
2.  Write post cards, letters, or e-mails to friends and family
3.  Write out the grocery list or phone messages
4.  Make up your own stories, both fictional and personal narratives; revise and publish
5.  Write poems
6.  Research a topic of interest; write an “All About _______” book

In Spelling:
1.  Practice making words
2.  Make your own flash cards
3.  Practice the words missed on the end-of-year test
